ALAMEDA — At its July 17 meeting, the city of Alameda’s Public Utilities Board presented a check for $10,426 to the Alameda Education Foundation.

The check represents funds collected in the 2016-2017 fiscal year by Alameda Municipal Power for Power Up for Learning, a joint program of AMP and AEF, according to AMP spokeswoman Kathleen Haley. The funding supports the Island robotics program based out of Wood Middle School.

By joining Power Up for Learning and adding an amount of their choice to their monthly electric bill, AMP customers have the opportunity to support technology education for Alameda public school students. Since the program began in 2004, AMP has collected more than $75,000 for Alameda’s public school students.

Robotics education helps students develop vital, 21st century skills such as understanding the scientific method; identifying relevant sources of information; and collaboration and teamwork. For as little as $1 per month, AMP customers can support robotics education by signing up for Power Up for Learning. From now until Nov. 30, AMP will donate $50 for every new sign up.
