Where Technology Is Placing US Jobs At Risk

Technological advances are becoming a major threat to lower-skill industries across the world, especially in developing countries. Computerisation and the impact of new technology in general have dramatically altered the labor market in the past and it will continue to do so for the foreseeable future. A report published earlier this year byCitigroup C +6.23% shows that an average of 77 percent of jobs in China and 69 percent of jobs in India are vulnerable to automation.

Developing nations aren’t the only ones at risk, however. The same report reveals that 47 percent of US jobs are also vulnerable to automation. Many cities, such as San Francisco, have managed to adapt to new technology and subsequently thrive while others have faded away into bankruptcy. Citigroup identified the top cities across the US that have the highest degree of risk from technology’s relentless rise. 54 percent of jobs in Fresno are at risk, along with 49 percent in Las Vegas.

The reason for some cities having a higher level of risk than others comes down to specialisation patterns, according to Citigroup. Diversified cities are more resilient to computerisation while more specialised cities (such as those with economies reliant on manufacturing) face a far higher level of risk.
