New tiny technology can help protect your valuables

DAYTON — Caught in the act!

A thief stealing tools from a garage in Dayton.

FOX 45 aired video of the theft a few months ago. But now there’s new technology that will soon be introduced to the Miami Valley that can help you fight back.

It’s called Protech DNA. This is how it works.

Put some glue and specks onto your property and let it dry.

When police check for it with black light the adhesive glows letting them know your property is marked.

“They got me, they got me good,” said Charles Peterman Jr.

We first met Peterman last October.

Tools valued at about $6,000 were stolen from his garage.

If someone steals your valuables, they could be as good as gone, unless you have a serial number of a photo of the items.

“And that’s the biggest problem I had, that’s what I told the detective. I told have a serial number … my stuff’s over 12 years old,” said Peterman.

We showed him new Protech DNA technology.

“This technology was created as a resource for law enforcement to help them identify stolen property,” said Shawn Andreas, president of Protech DNA.

The small identifying specks are applied to a tool or a television or any item.

The glue and the speck, which is smaller than a grain of sand, dries clear and the criminal likely wouldn’t even know it’s on the item.

“We actually etch that number into the dot so it won’t fade in the sunlight or any of the elements that would encounter the dot,” said Andreas.

Peterman told Reporter Elyse Coulter he would definitely consider using this technology.

The Protech DNA will be available here in the Miami Valley in just two weeks.

Soon, 35 police departments will have the technology available to them to use.

The dots will be available at some local retailers for about a $35 a kit.
